The event is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the largest membership association of amateur radio enthusiasts in the U.S.
The event is a contest/demonstration of amateur radio operators which involves setting up radios, computers, living quarters, radio towers, public education and demonstration areas without the use of external power. It includes 24 hours of operating radios with the goal of contacting as many amateurs as possible nationally and internationally.
The demonstration aspect of the event is an educational opportunity for the public, emergency management personnel and elected officials to learn of the potential assistance amateur radio can provide during loss of communications for extended periods of time.
All licensed ham operators are invited and encouraged to attend and participate. Anyone with an interest in ham radio is invited to attend.
